Great gatsby essay

The American dream, success, money and rights all there for anyone grasp with just a little hard work, but is this really how it works or are they cluelessly living in an illusion that everyone one in the whole of American have the sam chance achieving the American dream. The harsh truth is revealed in the novel The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. He reveals the true lives of 1920s Americans and how the American dream was not a fair game. Fitzgerald chose to portray the different achievement of the American dream using key settings West egg, East egg, and The valley of ashes. The ever wanting dream to be successful have money and have rights can sometime make people crazy.

The valley of ashes is Representation of how the American dream fails those who it was created to inspire and hope for. The purpose of the American dream and why it was created to inspire the less fortunate and give them hope. George and Myrtle Wilson are a great example they are the less fortunate characters in the book. The Wilsons show that most people the American dream was invented to inspire, are unable it achieve. The people with no money in the first place. In the 1920s it was a very hard to drag yourself out of the gutter of being poor only those who cheated could achieve this. Others were stuck there impossible for them to claw there way out and accomplish this impossible dream. Everyone around them accuse them of being lazy and that they don’t work as hard as them, but really they work the hardest. Everything they have and own they have to work for and its not just handed to them like it is fir the rich. ” ;where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air.” this shows how the people that live in The valley of ashes lives are already starting to crumble and break. There world is dim with very little hope. i don’t think that even today people with no money could achieve the American dream it is impossible and was made to make the rich feel good about themselves, more than to inspire.

East egg is a Represents the false achievement of the dream as these people were born into it. Everyone in east egg has never lifted a finger to earn money they were born into it. They believe that they are the hardest workers and the pore do nothing thats why they are rich and a the pore are not but actually the pore work ten times harder but it is harder for them to make there way in life if that is what they are born into. They despise all others and see themselves as the best. “Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of East Egg glittered…” this show how their houses are big and fancy and shine across the bay for everyone to see. They tower across the town like rulers. They truly think that they are best and better than everyone. “East Egg condescending to West Egg…” East egg thinks they are better than west egg, they are showing an aggregate attitude toward west egg. The rich in America 1920 all believed that they were the only one that achieve the American dream. Which is true, they may be living the dream that everyone want to live, but did they really achieve it. If everything they have was given to them and they were born into it they didn’t actually achieve anything. They didn’t achieve the American dream the were given it.

West egg represents achieving the American dream corruptly. They made money using illegal methods. Gatsby is a great example of this in the book. As we work out in the book he is a boot leggier this is someone who illegally sells alcohol. this is the only way the the pore in 1920 could achieve the American dream. Even thought it is wrong for it is the only way out of the whole that the pore are stuck in. The rich think that all you need to do is work hard to get wealthy but that is unfortunately incorrect the only way to go from nothing to everything is to do it the corrupt way like Gatsby. “He and this Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter. That’s one of his little stunts. I picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him, and I wasn’t far wrong.” This is showing what people guessed Gatsby had done to get his money and even though we never were really told how he made his money we all know this guess isn’t far off. Becoming rich the corrupt way is wrong but there was no other way out of the whole so do we forgive them

Success, money and rights they are the key on point of American dream an be accomplished with just a little hard work. But as we found this is not always the case the rich of 1920 were cluelessly living in an illusion that everyone one in the whole of American have the same chance achieving the American dream. we found how in 1920 the only way of achieving the dream was to either be born into it, or illegal working your way top and out of a whole. The rush to achieve the dream in the book was so ferce people were blinded and made terrible decisions. Fitzgerald portray the different achievement of the American dream using key settings West egg, East egg, and The valley of ashes. All with the same dream.
