term 2 great gatsby

As the novel is told through Nick’s eyes, I want to use some of his words to help us build a picture of who he is and what he represents. For each of the quotes below, discuss what characteristics are revealed. Comment on what the quote helps us to understand Nick’s purpose in the text.

  • “I am inclined to reserve all judgements, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and made me the victim of not a few veteran bores.”- Chapter One
  • “When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart. “ – Chapter One

He doesn’t want to have anymore adventures and people to confide in him. Because people confide in him and he has to watch their life blow up and he can’t say or do anything about it. So he’s like no more i am done i don’t want anymore drama.

He wants people to obey the morals that they have agreed to live by.

  • “…wedging his tense arm imperatively under mine, Tom Buchanan compelled me from the room as though he were moving a checker to another square.”- Chapter One

Shows how easy nick is manipulated and bossed around. When he says he is moved like a checkers piece its like he is blankly being move by someone else acording to someone elses apinoin. He has no say but he lets it happen without complaint.

  • “I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.” – Chapter Two

He is a part of there life but he doesnt fit in into if he kinda just sit on the side line and obseverse. I think the everything that happens doesnt have anything to do with him he was just there and he told the story. As the narrator he could never be part of the group.

  • “Most of the time I worked…I knew the other clerks and young bond salesmen by their first names…I even had a short affair with a girl who lived in Jersey City and worked in the accounting department, but her brother began throwing mean looks in my direction…” – Chapter Three

He is slightly nosey and he cares about the people that he works with more then other would. He is quite career driven. He probably have to keep focus to he can keep afloat he probably does not earn as much as most.

  • “I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.”– Chapter Three

He is quite cocky and up himself. But he is completely truthful either as he hides a lot of things from people.

  • “They’re a rotten crowd…You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together!’ I’ve always been glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever gave him because I disapproved of him from beginning to end.”- Chapter Eight

Gatsby is fake and he has done some not so great thing in his life so is he really any better or is he just the same. He is less selfish than Daisy and Tom but i still think he has done some bad things. And at the start of the book nick says he is not going to judge anyone but i think he just did.

  • “I shook hands with him. It seemed silly not to for I felt suddenly as though I was talking to a child.”- Chapter Nine

Instead of cursing drama he just walks away and leaves it at that moves one. Taking the easy way out and dodges the conflict because as a character i don’t think he likes conflict.

  • “I sat there brooding on the old unknown world…” –Chapter Nine

He is sitting thinking about the world and how its charged and that shows that he is quite a thoughtful character and he thinks a lot.

He does a three sixty he charges thought-out the book. Some of his morals change. he says he isn’t going to be judgemental but it ended up being judgmental and causing the book readers to be biest.

Daisy

the definition of a golden girls a very popular or successful young woman. she is quite perfect and everybody likes her and looks up to her and igmirire her. This term is referring to daisy, in the book she is perfect in every way and she gets all the guys and she is beautiful. a real life golden girl would be someone like Megen Markle the girl the married prince harry. I would consider her a golden girl

Explain how Daisy could be considered clever. Use at least one quote from the text to support your answer.

Daisy is indeed clever even thought she seems shallow and naive it is all an act that she has learn so she can service in the world that she lives in. Pretty girls who are shallow get by better in the her world than girls who are smart and opinionated. she very good at manipulating people and at the ends she has made all the guys around her to lie from her.

this quote shows that she is smart and she has

The notes above talk about how Gatsby views Daisy as a possession to be collected. Explain this further. Find a quote from the text to support your answer and explain how the quote supports your ideas. All men treat her as objects and not actually a person the always talk about her as if she’s not there even if she is there and she is always referes to as toms wife or mrs Biconin not Daisy.

Describe what life was like in the 1920’s for women. After you have done so, explain why you think Daisy wants her daughter to be a ‘fool’ in this world. The world they live in it is almost better to be a fool if your a girl. she doesn’t want her daughter to see how limited her options are and her being foolish would make her happier.

Towards the end of the novel, Nick says that Daisy and Tom were “careless people…they smashed up things and creatures, and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…”. Explain what Daisy ‘smashes up’ (figuratively speaking) in this story. Gatsby she breaks his life he devotes his life to her and she gets him killed. she breaks the Wilson and she breaks nick and she never stops to turn around to fix things she just forgets and moves on and leave everyone else to pick up the pieces.

Explain how Daisy could be considered ‘amoral’. Use at least two quotes from the text to support your answer. she either is not a-where of how much distructoin she makes or she just doesn’t care
